Gen 11

by Steve

The tower of Babel.

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. (Genesis 11:1 NIV)
So many things spring to mind, a common interface, common understanding etc.

So they move east and start construction using a different method – bricks instead of rocks, thus giving much better control over the process.

Build a city, make a name, to retain unity. Make a symbol, a tower to unite us.

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. (Genesis 11:1, 6 NIV)

I don’t understand why God thought this was a problem. Surely plans are good and building cities are good. It must be the derived consequences that are the problem….

The whole theory of just move the age out a decimal place is shattered here with the advent of people having sons in their 30-40s. They could not have had them when they were 3-4

But then they go on to live to 400 odd years old or more. Imagine

Gen 9 – 10

by Steve

We are no longer vegetarian! God now gives Noah and his family meat to eat and all the animals fear them.

He sets up the rainbow and the reason for it, never going to flood the earth again.
So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.” (Genesis 9:17 NIV)

All life on earth, not just the humans.

These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood. (Genesis 10:32 NIV)

How did they spread out over the earth?

Gen 6-8

Noah – what a story really – full of questions I am.
God regrets even having made the earth and man. Strange if you are God to regret anything really.
But then he finds Noah and his regret is turned to relief almost that he has found someone that He can live with. And so the story of Noah starts….

Noah is a good guy, sticks to the plan and the rest of the world just does their own thing it would seem. So He tells Noah what he is going to do and gives him the way to survive. Amazing level of detail of the construction of the boat really, never mind the trust that Noah must have had to follow and build that thing before the rain started.

He gets all the animals in, and it would appear that he needed 7 pairs of the clean kinds and only a single pair of the unclean ones. He does the whole survive the flood thing and the interesting thing is that I was wondering how they got the animals onto the ark in the first place, but when you see the statement near the end of the start of chapter 9 it could start to make some sense…..

Gen 4-5

by Steve

This is that strange bit about how long people lived and who they were father too etc. it is hard to believe that people could have lived to almost 1000 years old! If you move a decimal point in and then look at the ages it seems a little more logical according to what we have around us today. Nobody would have lived to be older than 100 then.

Gen 1-3

Genesis 1- 3 NIV

The first thing that I noticed was the mention of seeds during the creation process. Interesting in the context of things needing to reproduce.

Highlight in Genesis 2 was the fact that 2 trees were the important ones in the middle of the garden. The tree of life and then the other one that was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

They were initially allowed to eat from the tree of life, this seemed to be allowed – no problems – but it was the knowledge one that seemed to be the trouble. Do not to touch! Then the snake etc and they have selected the tree of knowledge and then they loose the right to eat from the tree of life…

What does this all mean? Surely knowledge is good, but I guess that not doing what you are told by God is the problem. It then gets locked away from them and us and we all loose access.

Just read the book ….. The rest will follow

The first thing to say about this – I have decided to write this as a record for myself.

It is about reading the book again. Start to finish. Time to recover some of the secrets that I missed.
